The Santa Maria River was judged to be a 'recreational waterway' and was also said to be a place where shellfish could be caught. The river is bone dry 10 months out of the year and only has a substantial water flow after a fairly large storm system moves through the area. A better recreational use might be dirt bike riding during the summer months.

FISCAL WOES
Santa Barbara County sits next to the Pacific Ocean, under which sit large deposits of oil and gas. Exxon-Mobil personnel have told me that the 3 platforms off the coast of Santa Barbara produce more natural gas than ALL of their platforms located in the Gulf of Mexico. Allowing oil companies to tap into the undersea oil reserves here would go a long way to solving the fiscal situation that currently exists, but our government officials don't seem to see the solution that is sitting just offshore.
THE UNITED BROTHERHOOD OF CARPENTERS AND JOINRS OF AMERICA - LOCAL 150 - CAMARILLO.
Nobody seems to like thses guys. They employ some shady tactics to protest people who do not use their services or hire their workers.
Case in point: The Arroyo Grande Ice Cream Parlor - Doc Burnsteins - decided to open a location in the Santa Maria Town Center Mall. The mall hired some local carpenters to work on the space Doc Burnsteins would occupy. The Carpenters Union didn't like this, so, they started picketing Doc Burnsteins shop with a huge banner which read SHAME ON DOC BURNSTEINS. Doc Burnsteins didn't actually have anything to do with who worked on the space in the mall. The same is true for K.T's gymnastics who is relocating into the mall. They were also picketed with a large banner saying basically the same thing. After several of these incidents, a local Union decided to show that not all union are stinkers, like theae guys, and bought everyone free ice cream on a Friday afternoon and educated the public that they don't stoop to the type of dirty tactics that the Local 150 Carpenters do.
